Piping Design Engineering is a Sub-engineering branch that comes under the mechanical/chemical engineering, and it can be specifically for Power Piping and oil & gas refinery piping and further some Sub specific types of piping come under this. (like utility area, Sulfur area, tank farm area, CCU etc.)

Piping design is a common sense which is not so common in general, but in specific area piping you have to learn the Standard/Model piping of that particular area, by keeping in view layout of area, Project standards asked to follow by client etc. This is how a refinery area piping looks like.

Piping designer is a sublet of Piping Engineer. Piping Department of any Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) company has following sub-divisions:

Piping Layout – Responsible for finalization of overall plant layout, plot plan, equipment layout, design / routing of all the piping systems as per P&ID and 3D modelling using software’s like PDMS, PDS, SP3D etc.

Material – Responsible for bulk procurement, material take off (MTO), issuance of material requisition (MR) and purchase requisition (PR), resolution of vendors technical queries etc.

Stress Analysis – Responsible for stress analysis of stress critical piping, support marking in isometrics, preparation of spring schedules, preparation of nozzle loadings, preparation of support sketch etc.

Software’s like Caesar II, AutoPIPE etc. are used for stress click here analysis.
AM3D Mechanical Consulant is involved in the detailed design on Piping systems using PDMS software’s. The main application of engineering knowledge goes in here.
